Overview
Galehead originated and developed this large scale solar project by transforming a reclaimed brownfield site into a successful renewable generation resource. The project qualified for utility offtake and contributed to local county funding.
Site Selection
By deploying proprietary LandCommand® siting analytics, Galehead identified land that was a designated brownfield site due to previous arsenic contamination. Through the team’s prospecting and development research, the region was dominated by thermal generation retirement, making it an ideal location for renewable energy development.
State Awarded Permitting
Galehead successfully navigated state-level permitting. Capon Bridge was one of the first three solar projects in the state to be awarded West Virginia permits. By continuously and effectively collaborating with state and local offices, Galehead could ensure the project was going to be accessible for utilities and beneficial for the local community.
Favorable Interconnection
Galehead collaborated with PJM and First Energy to enter the project into the interconnection queue, complete interconnection studies, and secure favorable interconnection rates before delivering the project to our Downstream Partner.
Attractive Offtake
The project was intentionally positioned for competitive off-take from Investor-Owned Utilities (IOU) and/or Commercial & Industrial (C&I) sectors. Its proximity to load pockets near the DC metro area and Northern Virginia data centers increased its value.
Community Benefits
Following through with the development thesis, the project successfully qualified for local utility offtake, ensuring that the renewable energy generated will be purchased by the local utility. This guaranteed a stable and potentially more affordable energy supply for nearby residents. Additionally, Galehead negotiated a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement, directly contributing to county funding and supporting community renovations, including the restoration of local, historic barn.
